Fu Zhen

My treatment of health issues consists mainly of the Chinese Abdomen Acupuncture “Fu Zhen”. The acupuncture is based on the ideas of Dr. Zhi-yun Bo’s method of abdomen acupuncture.

Acupuncture of the abdomen lasts on average 45 minutes. The location of the treatment is the receiver’s home, or any location deemed appropriate by the receiver. The receiver is treated in a supine position on a preferably firm bedding, and the abdomen needs to be uncovered.

Most of the treatments I give are free of charge. I never liked to ask for money for treating sick people. I prefer to treat people over 70 years of age who live in rural areas, are hardly mobile, and only have few monies to spend. Many of them have pain complaints due to their former hourlong working in the rice fields in bend down positions.

Some elderly Thai people (80-plus years of age) have a bodyweight of not more than 30-40 kg and that is the reason that their pain complaints must be treated with caution, so as not to hurt their fragile bodies. When applying acupuncture to skinny people in the trunk region , one can easily puncture the Thoracic cavity, the Abdominal cavity, or the Abdomino-pelvic cavity. That is why abdomen acupuncture (‘Fu Zhen’) is well suited to treat their complaints as the needling most of the time is very superficial (skin level only).

Qi Nei Zang

The abdomen is of dominant importance in ancient disciplines such as Chinese medical massage “Qi Nei Zang”. The abdomen is used traditionally for diagnosis as well as for treatment. Occasionally it seems more appropriate to apply massage to the abdomen than acupuncture. When so, I apply the ‘Qi Nei Zang’ massage techniques with adjusted pressure.

Massage of the abdomen lasts 60 minutes or more. The location of the treatment is the receiver’s home, or any location deemed appropriate by the receiver. The receiver is treated in a supine position on a preferably firm bedding, and the abdomen needs to be uncovered.

Once decided to give an abdomen massage, I prefer to fist apply some introductory massage/manipulation, to prepare the body for the abdomen massage. My introductory techniques consist of “Nuad Boran” techniques (traditional Thai massage techniques) and some (muscle) stretching through large-scale joint movements.

These oriental massage techniques can be rewardingly joint with Western massage techniques, I believe. The Oriental techniques are primarily meant to stimulate the flow of Qi, and the Western techniques are primarily meant to stimulate the flow of blood and lymph. I use them both.

Oriental massage techniques hold stretching, vibration, rocking, shaking, (deep) circular point-pressure movements, and joint mobilization. Western massage techniques hold gliding strokes, kneading, squeezing, rolling movements, stretching, and (deep) circular point-pressure movements.
